Lithium Batteries

Lola has a new hobby: photography. She will, of course, be the next big success in the art world, and needs more lithium batteries for her camera so she can spend a full day taking pictures. Otherwise, good-bye, photo exhibition! But where can she order them from? And can you even get batteries delivered, seeing as how they’re also a somewhat delicate issue…

More and more products on the market need batteries: PCs, cell phones, hoverboards, scooters, electric bikes and more. The problem with these products is that they can burst into flame. A nearby heat source, a severe bump and even a fall during shipping can result in a spontaneous fire.

Air regulations are extremely strict in this regard, but the restrictions are similar when a product of this type is being shipped by road.

Our recommendation for lithium Batteries:

First make sure we can ship the merchandise by checking the page on prohibited and dangerous goods. or talk to your sales contact about what you need to do.

So you know, La Poste and Colissimo can ship a new cell phone with its lithium battery, but will not accept a second-hand phone with the original battery as, when used, there might be a fault leading to a risk of explosion or leakage, with a resulting risk of fire.

On the other hand, we will not ship batteries designed for electric scooters, even new ones, as the total power is too high, increasing the risk.

What you should know:
Only the following batteries, in the stated quantities and with the stated characteristics, contained in the equipment designed for them, are authorised for road shipment* :

  • maximum 4 lithium ion batteries or 2 ion power packs, UN3481 (packaging instruction 967, Section II) per parcel, with cells not to exceed 20 Wh and batteries not to exceed 100 Wh, with a total maximum mass of cells and batteries of 5 kg per parcel.
  • maximum 4 metal lithium batteries or 2 metal lithium power packs, UN3091, (packaging instruction 970, Section II) per parcel, with disposable batteries not to have more than 1 gram of lithium and power packs not to have more than 2 grams of lithium, with a total maximum mass for batteries and power packs of 5 kg per parcel.

* France and Europe only. Air shipments (outside Europe) are not authorised as they are subject to air transport regulations.
